Two weekends only!
Open Circle Theater is pleased to announce the return of its reading series of new works by emerging local artists, XXX - a new works fest, running over two weekends, Aug. 5-6 and 12-13, at 2pm.
After a hiatus of 3 years Open Circle Theater once more presents XXX - a new works fest. The idea is that each piece will be presented twice; after each reading/performance the author will take feedback from the audience which is then worked into the next performance of the piece.
Two short collaborative pieces will run on contiguous Sat. & Sun. (one by High Kindergarten Performance group on the first weekend, the other by Karen Gruber and Larry Ryan on the second). The two longer pieces will alternate days over a week (one by Aaron Allshouse on Sat. 8/5 and Sun. 8/13, the other by Dustin Engstrom Sun. 8/6 and Sat. 8/12). The feedback from the theater community is the final pivotal element in the readings. It is the reason the performances are scheduled for 2pm on each day, as well as the admission being free.
The pieces are:
True North, by High Kindergarten Performance Group An exploration of movement and the theatrical form. Sat. 8/5 & Sun. 8/6
7-short & 1-long, by Larry Ryan & Karen Gruber Original writings inspired by the alarm to "abandon ship." Sat. 8/12 & Sun. 8/13
Once Upon a Fuckin' Time, by Aaron Allshouse Directed by Linda Lombardi Italian fairy tales through the lens of the world of the mobster. Sat. 8/5 & Sun. 8/13
In the Kafka Colony: Surreal Scenes and Other Descriptions of Struggle, by Dustin Engstrom Directed by Ron Sandahl Scenes based on writings from Kafka's notebooks and diaries. Sun. 8/6 & Sat. 8/12

World premiere! Local playwright Aaron Allshouse takes the audience on a wild ride through worlds both familiar and bizarre in this absurdist re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. In turns whimsical and alarming, it is a world where no aspect is entirely certain and literally anything might happen. And what about the pirates? A play that must be seen to be believed, and even then maybe not.

Some birth records just can't be broken.
A world premiere by John Kaufmann.
In 1970, a six year-old girl makes a cassette tape on the day her brother is born. Thirty-five years later, that brother visits her and records the birth of her first child. Created from these original recordings, D.O.B. uses verbatim texts, jumps in time, and an ensemble of seven actors to take the audience on a whirl-wind ride through the joy, agony, and absurdity of a first birthday. Conceived and directed by John Kaufmann (Starball, Line One, The Perception Project) D.O.B. is a chronicle of a family over time brought together through the chaos of birth.
Runs Jan. 27 - Feb. 25, Thu. - Sat. @ 8pm Sun. 2/19 @ 4pm
Tickets $12 All Thursdays are two-for-one. Sunday 2/19 is pay-what-you-will.
